There are many data frameworks currently being developed specifically for the rail industry.

railTOPOMODEL, focuses on a standardised railway data format that will provide multiple benefits for the sector, including improved data quality, more efficient business performance, streamlined and re-usable development, integrated IT systems, and Return on investments.

Aiming for defining and standardising interfaces in the future digital control command communication, signalling and automation system, the goal is a significant reduction of the lifecycle cost for signalling systems. The control and automation system forms the core of digital railroading. Digitisation brings major advantages to the railway system like continuous monitoring for condition based maintenance. On the contrary, there are a number of challenges with a widely distributed safety system that have been taken up by the EULYNX and will result in a further harmonisation of approval processes in EU.

Ontorail is an attempt to use the power of MediaWiki and its semantic capabilities to support the current sectorial initiatives for implementing a shared Railway Digital Knowledge Vault. The project is led by UIC, the International Union of Railways, in the context of its contribution to several projects for digitalization, in particular the IFC Rail project by buildingSMART International.

Shift2Rail is the first European rail initiative to seek focused research and innovation (R&I) and market-driven solutions by accelerating the integration of new and advanced technologies into innovative rail product solutions. Shift2Rail promotes the competitiveness of the European rail industry and meets changing EU transport needs. R&I carried out under this Horizon 2020 initiative develops the necessary technology to complete the Single European Railway Area (SERA).
